Flinders Ranges (Pic by Peripitus)
Flinders Ranges SA
Flinders Ranges are SA’s largest mountain range which begin about 200 km north of Adelaide and run (discontinuously) for over 430 km. These superb ranges are home to Wilpena Pound, a large natural amphitheatre of almost 80 sq km. Here also is the highest peak in the Ranges, St Mary Peak (1 170 m) as well as the adjoining 92 000 ha Flinders Ranges NP. This truly picturesque region also boasts Vulkathunha-Gammon Ranges NP covering almost 125 000 ha and Mount Remarkable NP of 18 000 ha.
Outback SA
South Australia’s Outback region covers almost three quarters of the state and is made up of magnificent gorges and waterholes, historic Aboriginal sites, remote Outback towns and communities and remains of abandoned European settlements from yesteryear. This arid landscape is also amazingly home to a number of national and conservation parks including Coongie Lakes NP, Lake Eyre NP, Simpson Desert CP and Witjira NP.
